HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (HRM)

(Human resource management, 2023)

What is HRM?

Human Resource Management (HRM) is a relatively new approach to managing people in any organization. People are considered the key resource in this approach. it is concerned with the people dimension in management of an organization. Since an organization is a body of people, their acquisition, development of skills, motivation for higher levels of attainments, as well as ensuring maintenance of their level of commitment are all significant activities.

A US professor has defined HRM (then, used term is Personnel Management) as the recruitment, selection, development, utilization of, and accommodation to human resources by organizations. (French, 1978 cited in Opatha, 2021). He states that all people involved in organizational operations, regardless of their position, make up an organization's human resources. The term used was personnel management at the time the definition was provided, but not HRM. The definition’s content includes three HRM functions.

In a journal article (Alam and Mukherjee, 2014) explains Human Resources Management as a set of practices that businesses use to ensure that they have an effective workforce in place to meet operational needs. They further states that successful organizations are those which value, develop and nurture their human capital to achieve their organizational goals and objectives.

As evolving subject human resources changed over the time and later Singh (2023) defined human resource management as a tactical approach that manages employees and the entire work culture.

Evolution of HRM

Personnel management was the name given to human resource management in its earliest days. Compliance and improving efficiency were the main objectives of personnel management both during and after the war. Over time, people management gained popularity and developed progressively connected with every aspect related to an organization's employees. subsequently, in the mid-1980s, the term "human resource management" appeared as an improved kind of personal management with the goal of strengthening the success of the company.

In a journal article Rotich (2015) states that HRM is a product of the human relations movement of the early 20th century, when researchers began documenting ways of creating business value through the strategic management of the workforce. He further states that the function was initially dominated by transactional work, such as payroll and benefits administration, but due to globalization, company consolidation, technological advancement, and further research, HR now focuses on strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial and labor relations, ethical considerations, diversity and inclusion.
